    Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site

    Built in 1716, this was originally an outpost designed to guard against Spanish forces moving in to the French Louisiane. Later, after the French lost to the English, the fort came into Spanish control, and was used as a trade center for a few years before it was abandoned. The present site is a replica of the original fort.

    Melrose Plantation

    Rebel State Historic Site

    This site marks the location where an unknown Confederate soldier was killed by three Union cavalrymen in the Civil War era. A local family buried the soldier and cared for his grave for nearly 100 years after his death. The site features a picnic area with kitchen facilities, a museum and outdoor exhibits.

    This site contains archaeological evidence for a native American culture from 2000 years ago. This culture from this site is a variant of the Hopewell culture found in Ohio and Illinois. A 3300 foot long earthwork, burial mounds, and evidence of primitive agriculture have been found here.

    Fort Jesup State Historic Site

    As a result of the Louisiana Purchase Treaty in 1803, which failed to clearly define the western boundary of Louisiana, this site became neutral ground for a brief period, ruled not by America or Spain, but by rogues. In 1822, Zachary Taylor established a fort at this site to help America regain control of the region. The site remained an important military post for almost 25 years.
